16th Century Farmhouse in England

Good Monday morning dear readers. Hope your weekend was sunny and bright.
I'm taking you over to England today. This house in Sussex was built over 500 years ago. First it was an arable farm, then a herb farm supplying the flowers for Mitcham lavender water. Its most recent re-incarnation was as a stud farm - the sand school is now a tennis court. Not many photographs I'm afraid and I would have loved to see the inside of the conservatory but well, this is what we have.

Summer House in Costa Brava

Located in the well-known holiday region of Costa Brava in Spain, this summer house belongs to Beatriz Domingo, owner of a clothing and accessories firm. She used a variety of recovered and vintage pieces and even some of her own design to decorate her home. Come and tour this modern rustic home with me today. I'd love to hear what you think of it!

Inviting sitting and dining area in the porch under a cane roof. Rustic terracotta tile flooring adds warmth.

The neutral background is ideal to add splashes of colour. Full length linen curtains brush the terracotta floor. Two tables were arranged side by side to make a large coffee table.

Retro style lamp on vintage coffee side table.

The same rectangular terracotta tiles of the floor were used for the top of the bench to sit next to the fireplace. The particular placing of the two small windows resemble pictures hanging on the wall. Love the simple vintage birdcage with a candle inside.

Open floor plan brings the dining room, sitting area and kitchen together in one luminous space. Country style rustic dining room table surrounded by chairs in two different styles.

Close up of the white and pink table setting.

The dining room and kitchen open onto a terrace. Glazed green tiles were used for the counter tops and backsplash.

Exposed beams and original cane lining instead of paint for the ceiling in the master bedroom.

Antique iron day bed, window style mirror, small white painted trumeau and the rustic pillows for this inviting lounging area.

Vacation House Renovation

I'm sure you like looking at before and after photographs. This 1980's house in Bridgehampton, New York, used to be dark and barn-like and was transformed into a light filled summer house. For this, owners Nina Richter and her husband, Greg, appointed architect Stuart Disston and interior designer Ken Gemes.

The front before the renovation.

To give the house the profile Nina wanted, architect Stuart Disston reshaped the structure by extending rooflines to create two gambrels.

After. An antique mahogany table, teak stools, and a thick sisal rug from in the large open foyer. Stairs were widened and flared at the base, and walls were paneled and painted Benjamin Moore Linen Sand.

The living room before the renovation.

After. The stone fireplace surround was replaced with wood panels and trim for a refined style. A room overlooking the living area was enclosed and a walkway to a second-level balcony was added above the fireplace.

French doors with transoms open the living room to a back porch.

Nina Richter and daughters Gretchen, 14, and Sabina, 11, with dogs Otto and Olive, sit on the porch off the living room.

An old harvest table in the dining area is surrounded by teak-and-cane chairs

The kitchen before the renovation.

After. A boxed beam ceiling with beadboard insets and simple cabinets with chrome hardware give the kitchen a vintage feel. A Roman shade in adds a pop of warm color. Caned-back bar stools around the island.

An attached garage was reconfigured, making space for an TV/sitting room.

A guest room was created when an open space overlooking the living area was enclosed. Designer Ken Gemes chose a sea-foam palette, including draperies made with a hand-blocked fabric.

A chair and ottoman (by the bed) are covered in an aqua linen trimmed with ivory piping.

The rear of the house before the renovation.

The back exterior was balanced with the addition of a second chimney, matching an existing one. The new chimney serves both a fireplace in the sunroom and a grill on the porch. A covered back porch, sunroom addition, and new balcony above the porch open the interiors to the yard.

Blue Bathrooms

Today we'll have a look at a House Beautiful selection of eight blue bathrooms by different interior designers. I'd love to know which one you like best!

1.

Royal blue glass tile and a glass wall covering were chosen by designers Kim Coleman and Michele Green.

2.

Moorish-style bath designed by Robin Bell has cooling cobalt blue glass tile and a glittering tile mosaic floor.

3.

Heidi Bonesteel chose to use the bright turquoise blue tile close to the ceiling for a fresh and tranquil look in this spa-like bath in Laguna Beach, California.

4.

Designer T. Keller Donovan used a blue lantern light fixture and blue accents in this otherwise white bathroom.

5.

Designer T. Keller Donovan used an indoor-outdoor fabric on these bathroom walls to match the blue-and-white tiled floor.

6.

For color palette inspiration, designer Paolo Moschino chose to use all shades of blue in this bathroom, reflected in the Italian chinoiserie-style painting over the tub.

7.

Designer Frank Roop drew the mosaic tile floor on a computer with CAD software, and had it manufactured it in one piece, like a carpet. The rest of this Nantucket home is awash in blues, too.

8.

James Radin designed this large dressing room joining the bathroom and bedroom of this Los Angeles home. White interiors get a pop of blue from an orchid vase and seating upholstery.
