Charles and Barbara live with their three children in this home on an island just off the coast of Maine. The biggest problem they had when they bought it was the fresh water supply - the previous owners had benefited from a well, which no longer existed. However, they managed to have pipes fastened to the bottom of the sea and connected them to the water supply in the nearby town. They have no electricity so there are many oil lamps in every room. Most of the furniture are lightweight pieces such as wicker as it hard to bring heavy ones over from the mainland.
Exquisite! Beloved Maine (I'm from down the road, in Massachusetts, originally). Maine Islanders are hardy folk....Winter, Spring, and Fall weather will be severe right there on the sea. What a gorgeous place...a dream for so many. Though we've learned that living on the edge of the sea (in this case the west of Ireland) can be difficult with the constant storms...and it's much milder here than in Maine! So we're going to France. But we will miss the view of Galway Bay. It's hard to get everyhting at once ;-)
Thanks Puppyfur! The article said the owners had lost some of their furniture during the storms you mention but they were quite used to this. That's why most of the furniture is low cost. Lucky you that you are going to France!
Kifus, It's so pretty but I'm not sure I'd enjoy living by oil lamps. I also thought of what your first reader mentioned, the storms and bitter cold would be challenging during the winter months. It must take a special soul to brave the elements. Karen
Oh my, Kifus, I am completely smitten. Love the stone interior, but like the others, I am way to dependent on modern conveniences to actually live here, but oh it's so beautiful!!
Hi Kifus, wow - what a view! charming house - so much character! The last time I was here I came across a beautiful house and I remember commenting and saying it was my favourite one so far! Do you know which one it was??? I can't find it!

I agree with you that I couldn't live here, especially not with children. But I would be willing to spend a romantic weekend here with my hubby!
